THE LAST SHAKER

After the death of Sister Sara, Brother Lawrence finds himself in the unenviable position of being the final living member of the formerly prosperous Shaker religion. As the de-facto leader of the utopian Christian sect based on chastity, communal ownership, and labor, Lawrence has decided they won’t be trying to accept any new members who might seek to corrupt the large and beautiful complex that used to house his community. Instead, he plans to live out the rest of his days working in obscurity, trusting that the tenets of the faith and its commitment to build “heaven on earth” will persist long after the religion dies out. But when a young student shows up eager to learn about Shakerism, Lawrence is faced with thorny questions of faith, legacy, and commitment, and begins to wonder whether he really wants to be “The Last Shaker.”
